Bourn Hall has created a dedicated Miscarriage Clinic to support those that have experienced early pregnancy loss after natural conception or fertility treatment. The chances of early pregnancy loss are much higher than widely thought, and even though it may never happen again, couples often want reasons for their loss. Our Miscarriage Clinic aims to provide some answers to their questions and recommendations where appropriate.

The menstrual cycle is often divided into two phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase spans from the first day of your period until the day of ovulation, while the luteal phase starts at ovulation and ends the day before your next period.![]()

Ovulation is where a mature egg is released from the ovary and is swept into the adjacent fallopian tube. This occurs on or around day 14 of your cycle, meaning you will be most fertile on or around this day. ![]()

Sperm can survive a few days inside the fallopian tubes so the best time to have sex if you’re trying to conceive is a few days before ovulation and during ovulation.![]()

Every 28 days (or thereabouts), between the ages of around 13 and 51, a woman will release a mature egg from her ovary which has the potential to be fertilised and develop into an embryo. ![]()

If fertilisation does not occur, then the mature egg, along with the spongy lining of the womb which developed to protect and nourish the developing embryo, is lost through the menstrual bleed.![]()
