“It is hard to picture it from those tiny cells but every embryo we look at has the potential to become a baby and so we look after every one as well as we can. We are proud of the Bourn Hall legacy and we care passionately about every patient who comes through our door.”

Personalised treatment

Being treated like a person, not a condition, is important and so our team – the receptionists, nurses, doctors, embryologists – will get to know you and support you on your journey.

As part of this we provide free fertility counselling for patients who feel they would benefit from it and a Support Group that meets regularly.

Support for the fertility journey

Going from un-pregnant to infertile to fertility treatment and beyond are major life changes and some people struggle more than others to adapt to this unpredictable journey.

At Bourn Hall we offer fertility support at every stage so you can find something that works for you, including independent counselling for all treatments, support events throughout the year, and a fertility support group.

Read more about the many types of support we offer here.

“If you haven’t become pregnant in a year or two of trying then there is an issue of some type and we can speed up the process of finding the answers you need. Many of the common causes of infertility are easily treated without the need for IVF by introducing weight loss programmes, ovulation induction medication or lifestyle changes.”

Fertility tests and advice

There are many ways in which people can improve their fertility chances and only a few will need IVF treatment. We have a dedicated Fertility Health and Wellbeing Suite that provides fertility testing and advice to help you decide what to do if you are concerned about your fertility.

To have a fertility test you don’t need a GP referral and don’t need to have been trying for a family. The results may help you to rule out a concern, such as low sperm count or PCOS, or help you to decide about the need for treatment.

Our fertility nurse specialists will talk through your medical history, lifestyle and concerns and advise on your options.

If a complete fertility check is needed all of the tests can be completed within just six weeks and the results discussed with a consultant.

Book a free Fertility Health and Wellbeing consultation, or read more about our new Fertility Diagnosis and OI Treatment service that is free to those referred by their GP.

NHS IVF treatment for Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Suffolk

Bourn Hall holds the contract to provide NHS-funded IVF treatment across the whole of the East of England so if you are eligible for NHS-funded treatment and live in area that funds IVF treatment you can ask to be referred to the Cambridge Clinic for your treatment. If you are funding your own IVF treatment you can book an appointment directly with us.

Male infertility

Bourn Hall has pioneered a number of treatments for male infertility including: sperm freezing,  ICSI where a single sperm is injected into the egg, MicroTESE which can find sperm even when there are none in the semen, and surgical sperm retrieval.

Fertility preservation

The Cambridge clinic also has a dedicated sperm and egg bank for patients needing donor gametes and provides a sperm, egg and embryo freezing service for patients wishing to freeze their own.

Sperm and egg freezing is also being used by an increasing number of transgender patients prior to transition as well as people needing to freeze in advance of medical treatment such as chemotherapy. Egg freezing for social reasons is also available for women who want to optimise their future fertility chances by freezing their eggs before the age of 35 when the quality and quantity declines.

Sperm bank and IUI

Bourn Hall’s sperm bank is a far safer option for single women and female same-sex couples than trying to find a donor online. All our donors are asked about their medical and family history and we perform a medical examination and blood tests. All sperm samples are rigorously screened and then frozen and quarantined for six months, after which the donor is invited back to repeat the tests. The recipient of the sperm donation is most commonly treated using IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) which involves placing the prepared sperm in to the uterus at the time of ovulation.

“We went to a Bourn Hall open day at Cambridge and looked around and it was really exciting. There were so many people there and we weren’t the only gay couple. It was actually really eye-opening. This opportunity wouldn’t have been available to us a few years ago. Bourn Hall has meant that I can be with the person I want to be with and I get a baby too, I cannot thank them enough.”

– Rachel, who had a son with her partner Clare in 2017 after Rachel was treated at Bourn Hall Cambridge using donor sperm and IUI

“Miscarriage is heart-breaking at any age and this is more likely for women in their late thirties and older. Research which helps to explain how the processes work will allow us to develop and improve tools and techniques for helping these women have a successful pregnancy.”

Extra care for those with a history of loss

Reassurance scans

Many of the patients we see have tried for years to get pregnant or have miscarried before, we understand that this can make you more anxious. So we offer a range of ultrasound baby scan packages using the latest 3D and 4D technology to provide expectant parents with extra reassurance and support.

Embryo screening

Patients who have suffered recurrent miscarriage, have had repeated implantation failure or are aged over 35 can benefit from Bourn Hall Cambridge’s chromosome screening service, PGS (Pre-Implantatation Genetic Screening), which can help embryologists select an embryo which is most likely to succeed.

Research to help overcome miscarriage

Behind-the-scenes our Cambridge clinic also houses a pioneering research lab using state-of-the-art technology to investigate why the quality of women’s eggs decline with age. Eggs which fail to mature and develop correctly are a common cause of miscarriage and infertility in older women.
