“If you haven’t become pregnant in a year or two of trying then there is an issue of some type and we can speed up the process of finding the answers you need. Many of the common causes of infertility are easily treated without the need for IVF by introducing weight loss programmes, ovulation induction medication or lifestyle changes.”

Fertility testing in Essex

If you have been trying to get pregnant for over a year then do get good advice. There are many ways in which people can improve their fertility chances and only a few require IVF. The challenge however is knowing early enough is there may be an underlying reason for not getting pregnant – and couples can often delay seeking help out of embarrassment.

Getting fertility tested through the NHS at a local hospital can sometimes mean being put on a long waiting list and multiple visits for different tests over a period of months.

Bourn Hall Wickford offers a free initial consultation with a Fertility Nurse Specialist and then we can recommend which tests might be needed such as semen analysis and ovulation assessment. If a complete fertility check is needed all of the tests can be completed within just six weeks and the results discussed with a consultant.

NHS IVF in Essex

Bourn Hall has excellent IVF success rates and holds the contract to provide NHS-funded IVF treatment across the East of England. So if you are eligible for NHS-funded treatment and live in an area that still provides funding you can ask to be referred to the Wickford Clinic.

If you are self-funding there is no need for a GP referral, there is no waiting list and treatment can take about six weeks.

Wickford is very easy to reach by train or car and you can book an appointment directly with us.

Specialist expertise

Some people suspect they might have a problem conceiving – a childhood illness or painful periods may impact fertility.  If you have concerns then do come and have a chat with a fertility nurse specialist.

PCOS

We have particular expertise in improving the fertility chances of women with conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects 5–10% of women and is a common cause of infertility. PCOS in some women makes it difficult to lose weight and this can restrict access to NHS fertility treatment. We encourage women and couples to gain a proper diagnosis and if needed we can support weight loss as this can increase natural fertility for PCOS patients and improve long-term health prospects.

Fertility preservation

The Wickford clinic also has a dedicated sperm and egg bank for patients needing donor treatment and provides a sperm, egg and embryo freezing service for patients wishing to freeze their own gametes.

Sperm and egg freezing is also being used by an increasing number of transgender patients prior to transition as well as people needing to freeze in advance of medical treatment such as chemotherapy. Egg freezing for social reasons is also available for women who want to optimise their future fertility chances by freezing their eggs before the quality and quantity declines.

Same-sex couples

Bourn Hall’s sperm bank is a far safer option for anyone needing donor sperm than trying to find a donor online. For example, we have seen an increase in the number of female same-sex couples at our clinics in recent years. All our donors are asked about their medical and family history and we perform a medical examination and rigorous screening.

The recipient of the sperm donation is most commonly treated using IUI (Intrauterine Insemination), which involves placing the prepared sperm in to the uterus at the time of ovulation.
