What is ZyMot?

ZyMot is a sperm preparation device that separates sperm of the highest quality and motility for use in ART treatments. We use a Zymot device, called a chip, this technology aims to replicate elements of natural conception.

How does it work?

The Zymot device contains a membrane filter which has been designed to mimic natural barriers in conception and only allows sperm of the highest motility to pass. A semen sample is loaded into the device and the most motile sperm swim through the membrane into a separate chamber. The sperm are collected and then used for treatment. Traditional sperm preparation methods use centrifugation to prepare the sample, which place stress on the sperm and may increase DNA fragmentation levels.

Some research studies have shown

  • There is a significant reduction in DNA fragmentation levels in samples prepared using Zymot, compared to other preparation methods.
  • Euploidy rate is higher in embryos created after ICSI with Zymot prepared sperm, compared to density gradient.
  • Zymot prepared sperm has had a higher clinical pregnancy rate in ICSI cycles compared to traditional methods.

Zymot is a relatively new device so studies are limited and some findings differ. Further research is needed to investigate its full potential. https://www.zymotfertility.com/publications/

Who should use ZyMot?

ZyMot may benefit patients:

  • With high levels of Sperm DNA fragmentation.
  • Have had previous failed ICSI cycles
  • Are undergoing PGT-A cycles
  • Have recurrent implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage

It can also be used for anyone undergoing IVF or IUI (intrauterine insemination) cycles if desired.

Who should NOT use ZyMot?

A minimum of 1 million progressively motile sperm per millilitre is necessary to use ZyMot for ICSI. As a result, samples with low motile sperm counts or very poor motility will need to be processed using the traditional method.
If you choose to use ZyMot, an embryologist will inform you on the day of your ICSI treatment if it cannot be used, and any associated fees will be refunded.

ZyMot is not recommended for:

  • Sperm concentration levels <1 million/ml
  • Non-ejaculated sperm samples (e.g., surgically retrieved, retrograde ejaculation)
  • Hyper-viscous sperm samples
  • Samples with bacterial contamination

How ZyMot Can Improve Your IVF Journey

These treatments are designed to address common challenges in fertility, particularly those related to sperm quality, embryo development, and implantation. By improving the sperm selection process this treatment aims to increase the chances of successful implantation and a healthy pregnancy.
